Regarding the purchase of fruit, there are always different considerations such as the harvest period, quantities available and price. What we never do is air trade, so if we have fruit overseas, it is shipped.
Some more information on this:
– The season for Dutch apples is often over by May. Even the apples that can be stored for a long time in the refrigerator at Dutch organic growers are pretty much gone by then. So then it is waiting for the first summer apples. That is why apples can usually only be delivered from other European countries until the end of July/beginning of August.
Sometimes the apples come from Italy, from a large cooperative in South Tyrol (VOG) to which about 300 growers are affiliated. In that case, the specific grower cannot really be traced. Weblink: VOG Home of apples – Consortium of South Tyrolean Fruit Growers’ Co-operatives.
– The same applies to organic pears. Of these, the season is often already over in April and pears from Dutch cultivation are usually not available until autumn. Pears from Argentina are therefore not something we like to put in the packages often, but at the moment it was difficult to find something else whose price was not too high. In the summer there will be stone fruit in the packages more often, but that can still be too expensive sometimes.
– We often buy the oranges through Solid Organic Link, then we can often include the grower. Weblink Solid Organic Link.
– The apricots from Sicily come from InCampagna, a cooperative that we like to work with because they work closely with their producers. Sometimes we also buy melons from them. Weblink: InCampagna.
– Unfortunately bananas are not sourced from Europa. The importer from which we purchase bananas almost every week is BeeOrganic. Weblink: BeeOrganic.
